The 1994 Cobo Arena criminal attack
It was envy and bad mindset of her rival, Tonya Harding’s husband that led to a criminal attack on the medal-aspiring ice skater, Nancy Kerrigan. It was 6 January 1994 in Detroit when Nancy walked through a corridor of the Cobo Arena after her practice session unaware of what was in store for her on that fateful day.
A police baton bludgeoned her on her right lower thigh by an attacker who was later arrested and found to be Shane Stant, a hitman employed by her rival Tonya Harding’s husband, Jeff Gillooly. Luckily for Nancy, she had a fast recovery and could compete in the upcoming Olympics. Besides, this attack only added to her fame and she also received several offers for endorsements.

In a recent interview on Inside Edition, Shane Stant said:
“The ultimate goal was so that she wouldn’t skate at the Nationals,”
“There was initial talk of like, cutting her Achilles tendon, which obviously would cripple her. I didn’t think it was necessary. I wasn’t willing to do that on top of that.”
Shane was sentenced to 18 months in jail while Jeff got 2 years of imprisonment. Tonya maintained throughout that she was not aware of the whole conspiracy.
Nancy was strongly interested in ice skating right from her childhood. She won the Boston Open at the age of nine.
