Paula Deen’s birth and childhood
Paula Deen was born as Paula Ann Hiers on January 19, 1947, in Albany, Georgia, the USA. Her childhood was spent in Southwestern Georgia very close to where her ancestors had owned cotton plantations. She was initially with her maternal grandparents but at age 6, she moved back to her parents’ house when they purchased a gas station and souvenir shop in Albany.
However, her closeness to her grandmother continued and it was from her that Paula learned and mastered the cooking styles and recipes typical of Southern USA.

Paula Deen’s difficult married life
Paula completed her graduation in 1965 from Albany High School. Soon after, Paula married her school sweetheart Jimmy Deen. In 1966, Paula’s father died and this was followed 4 years later by the demise of her mother. The circumstances were not quite conducive and in order to make ends meet, she did odd jobs such as hanging wallpapers, working in a bank, and selling real estate and insurance.
While working in the bank as a teller, she was robbed at gunpoint.
The responsibilities to raise her young children fell on her shoulders. All these adversities took its toll on her mental status and she suffered from panic attacks and agoraphobia. They then made the move to Savannah and things seemed to stabilize a bit. She secured a job in a hospital. In order to earn some extra income, Paula started a side business of making lunch for her colleagues at the hospital.

Deen’s business soon expanded. In 1989, she also divorced her husband. She set out all alone to boost her small venture and also take care of her two sons and her younger brother Earl (Bubba). In 1991, she managed to open a small sit-down restaurant at a Savannah hotel. She named it The Lady and lo and behold! It started flourishing.
In 1996, she made the move to a larger space and renamed it as ‘The Lady and Sons’. Her loyal customer base widened. She also went on to publish her own book of recipes in 1998. The book was appreciated and it raised her status to that of a celebrity chef. More than 70000 copies were sold in a day and Paula then also earned a slot to showcase her cooking skills on the TV channel Food Network.
In 2002, she started her show ‘Paula’s Home Cooking’. Her warm and charming personality, her nonjudgmental attitude, her humor, and modesty enthralled one and all.
Paula Deen’s honors and awards
All this fame pushed her show to the top ranking slot. It was widely viewed and was given positive ratings. This helped her earn an Emmy award in 2007 for her outstanding hosting of the show. She created and hosted two more shows on the same network but in a different format. These were ‘Paula’s Party’ in 2006 and ‘Paula’s best dishes’ in 2008. She continued to expand her cuisine empire and opened more restaurants.
She also continued to publish informative and useful books for her viewers. By 2012, she has more than 12 books to her credit. She also launched a magazine and also her life story book called ‘Paula Deen: It Ain’t All About the Cookin’. It became New York’s best sellers.

She also opened a restaurant at casinos and developed her own lines of kitchenware and food items. She had some legal tangles due to use of a racial slur. In spite of an apology, she was fired by Food Network.
She contested on Dancing with the Stars and also started a new show ‘Positively Paula’ and also commenced her own clothing line.
