Rena Kubota

Rena Kubota, sometimes referred to as Rena or Reina in the ring, is a professional Japanese shoot wrestler, kickboxer, and mixed martial artist. She is currently participating in the strawweight class of Rizin.

Early Life, Family & Education

On June 29th, 1991, Rena Kubota was born in Osaka, Japan.

Career and Profession

On July 1st, 2007, Rena made her kickboxing debut in the all-female promotion J-Girls at New Heroine Coming!

She was beaten by flyweight New Heroine tournament semifinalist Asami Furuya by a split decision.

In the same way, Kubota competed once again in the J-Girls World Queen Tournament and defeated Mika Nagai by a decision on November 4, 2007.

Rena’s subsequent match was also her debut in the shot boxing division.

On December 23, 2007, she won a decision against Kanako Oka at Shoot Boxing 2007 Mu-So 5.

During the Road to S-Cup series, she prevailed in her next two matches.

Rena tied Miku Matsumoto in a kickboxing contest on June 1st, 2008, at ClubDEEP Toyama Barbarian Festival 7 as part of the Deep organization.

On July 21st, 2008, Rena fought Misato Tomita again in the shot boxing division and prevailed through decision after extra rounds.

On November 24th, 2008, in the Shoot Boxing World Tournament, Rena faced Miku Matsumoto again and suffered her second professional defeat there. Miku prevailed after a unanimous decision.

Rena made her K-1 debut on March 20, 2009, at K-1 Award & MAX Korea 2009, where she lost to Su Jeong Lim by a split decision after an extra round. Rena only competed in one match for the promotion.

Shoot Boxing Girls S-Cup

Rena also won her second consecutive Girls S-Cup after defeating American MMA fighter Kate Martinez through the decision in the semi-finals and Ai Takahashi by decision after two extra rounds.

Rena featured on TBS’s Beautiful Women Athletes Full Performance- TV 2011 Athletic Club of Fire on January 11, 2011, following her second Shoot Boxing Girls S-Cup triumph, where she competed against and beat male comedians Koji Imada, Hidetsugu Shibata, and Yu Shinagawa in demonstration matches.

While the show’s TV ratings were on average 11.8 percent, Rena’s appearance received the highest rating, 16.8 percent, making her ring name the second-most popular term on Google Japan the next day.

On April 23, 2011, at Shoot Boxing 2011 Act 2 in Tokyo, Rena competed against South Korean boxer Sun Young Kim, however, Sun Young pulled out of the match.

Rena thus met Erika Kamimura, a rising star for the J-Girls, in an exhibition battle. To everyone’s amazement, Rena was knocked down just once throughout the single, three-minute round.

Shoot Boxing 2011

On June 5, 2011, at Shoot Boxing 2011 Act 3, Rena fought Ai Takahashi once more in a five-round championship match, losing by unanimous decision.

Further, Rena met Thai Zaza Sor on August 19, 2011.

Aree fighting at the 2011 Shoot Boxing Girls S-Cup in a non-tournament match.

She put Zaza in a standing arm-triangle choke, which caused him to struggle ferociously to free himself. Zaza, however, was unable to free himself from Rena’s hold.

But in the second round, Rena delivered a powerful blow to Zaza’s stomach that knocked her out, giving Rena the victory.

Zaza gripped her aching tummy while lying flat on her back. Zaza was so unable to continue, and Rena emerged victorious.

The opponent was in such much pain the second time Rena used one of her devastating blows that they were unable to stand and continue the fight.

Hisae Watanabe was the first opponent to collapse in agony, much like Zaza.

Rena also competed in a shot boxing bout against Jessica Penne, a Bellator MMA veteran, at Shoot Boxing 2011 Act 4 on September 10, 2011, however she lost the contest by majority decision.

Rizin Fighting World Grand Prix

She competed in the first Rizin Fighting Federation event and won matches against Miyuu Yamamoto and Hanna Gujwan in the Rizin Fighting World Grand Prix 2016.

Similar to how she defeated Dora Perjes, Andy Nguyen, and Irene Cabello Rivera in Rizin 2017, she fell short against Kanna Asakura.

In the same way, Rena defeated Kanna Asakura in 2018 before falling to Elaine Leal.

Rena triumphed against Samantha Jean-Francois, Alexandra Alvarez Carlos, Lindsey VanZandt, and Emi Tomimatsu from 2019 to 2020.
