Jon Gruden’s rejoins as head coach
Jon Gruden has officially taken over as the head coach of Oakland Raiders. He will receive $ 100 million over 10 years to transform the coaching at Raiders.
He decided to leave the booth and take to the head coaching job; a job which he no doubt liked but had left about 8-9 years back. This is a good deal since his annual pay with ESPN was $ 6.5 million.
The revamp
Jon Gruden has said that it is his priority to first change his coaching staff. The star was made when he announced his three coordinators. Some of the past head coach’s team members have been removed while some have been retained. The new team would be formed first before the real grilling starts.

His career so far
Jon Gruden joined the football landscape when he was hired as a graduate assistant coach at the University of Tennessee in 1985. After one year, Jon joined Southeast Missouri State and worked for them for two years as the quarterbacks coach. In 1989, he became the offensive assistant at the tight ends coach at the University of the Pacific. 1990 saw him as the special assistant with San Francisco 49ers. In 1991, he migrated to the University of Pittsburg as the wide receivers coach.
For three seasons from 1992, he was with the Green Bay Packers. He was later with the Philadelphia Eagles as their offensive coordinator. He was recruited by Oakland Raiders’ owner Al Davis as the head coach from the 1998 season. Jon proved his worth and brought Oakland Raiders amongst the top football teams. They reached the AFC Championship.
After 4 seasons with Raiders, Jon Gruden joined Tampa Bay Buccaneers as the head coach. Here too under his tutelage, the team won the Super Bowl XXXVII. There were some problems at the 2006 game which was however not attributed to Jon but injuries amongst the players and the salary cap. The team improved their performance in 2007 and Jon proudly said:
“The future is so bright around here I have to wear shades”
He got a contract extension from 2008 till 2011. Due to the dismal performance of the Buccaneers in 2009, Jon was fired in January 2009. He created the Fired Football Coaches Association and also volunteered as a coach at Carrollwood Dat School, Tampa. He started to anchor sports shows and events with ESPN in 2009. He used to host the Monday Night Football broadcast and also won awards for his presentations. And now the return to Oakland Raiders!
His married life
Jon is married to Cindy Gruden. The two had met at the University of Tennessee. He was still a starter and Cindy was studying there. Jon had made it clear that he would marry Cindy only after he procured a full-time job.
They got engaged soon after and Jon took her to the local jeweler shop to choose an engagement ring with $ 1800 in hand. The couple married on 6 July 1991. They are blessed with three children; son Deuce (born 19 January 1994) who also has joined the Oakland Raiders team as a strengthening and conditioning staff, Michael and youngest Jayson. They are a happily married couple with no marital conflicts.
Jon’s early life
So what about his life before fame? Well, Jon Gruden was born on 17 August 1963 in Sandusky, Ohio. His father Jim was a regional football scout agent. His mother was Kathy Gruden. He has a brother called Jay who is the head coach at Washington Redskins. He also has an elder brother called James who is a radiologist at the Weill Cornell Medicine. He studied at Clay High School South Bend, Indiana.
He graduated in 1981 and later joined Muskingum College, New Concord, Ohio. In one year, he took a transfer to the University of Dayton. He played football on the college team. He obtained a degree in Communications in 1985.
