Robert Herjavec | Early Life, Family, and Education
He was born in Varadin, Croatia, on September 14, 1962. (formerly Yugoslavia). His family moved to Canada when he was only eight years old.
The family boarded the “Cristoforo Colombo” in 1970 and arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia. They eventually relocated to Toronto, where they spent 18 months living in the basement apartment of a family friend’s house.
Later, he got a political science and English literature degree from New College at the University of Toronto. He accepted a number of minimum wage jobs, including delivering newspapers, waiting at restaurants, and retail sales, to help the family financially.

Early Career
His first career was in the film industry, working in various production tasks behind the camera. He participated in various productions as one of the assistant directors, including the 1985–86 film “The Return of Billy Jack,” which was never released. His early cinematic career came to an end as the “XIV Winter Olympic Games” Field Producer for Global TV.
Later, he found out about a job vacancy at ‘Logiquest,’ a computer business that had previously sold IBM mainframe emulation boards. Despite being underqualified for the job, he was able to land a job for himself by offering to work for free for the first six months in exchange for a permanent position. He ultimately rose to the position of General Manager of Logiquest.
Entrepreneurial Success
He quit the corporation in 1990 to launch his own business, which he was able to do from the basement of his house under the name “BRAK Systems.” It quickly rose to the #1 spot in Canada for Internet security software. AT&T purchased ‘BRAK Systems’ in 2000 for $100 million. Within a few more years, he was successful in selling Nokia another technological business for $ 225 million.
In 2003, he returned to the business world and founded a new company called “The Herjavec Group” after a temporary retirement as a stay-at-home father. He currently holds the position of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for the business, one of Canada’s fastest-growing software companies.
Writing and Television Career
He is not just a thriving businessman but also a well-known television personality. He appears in two different national iterations of “Dragons’ Den,” including the American ABC series “Shark Tank” and the Canadian CBC TV series “Dragons’ Den.”
Aside from that, he is the author of two bestsellers: “The Will to Win: Leading, Competing, Succeeding” (2013) and “Driven: How to Succeed in Business and Life” (2010). The latter offers life lessons that claim to lead readers to greater happiness and success, while the former is founded on the work and life ideals that made him both wealthy and successful.

When the 2011 season of “The Ferrari Challenge” kicked off in St. Petersburg, Florida, he took home the “Rookie of the Year” award after winning both vehicle races.

Robert Herjavec wed Diane Plese, his first wife, in 1990. They divorced after a 24-year union during which they had witnessed Herjavec’s business triumphs.
A divorce was formally finalized two years later. The couple gave birth to three children—two daughters and a son—during their marriage. Diane Plese received $25 million in total.
After that, Herjavec’s mental health was severely damaged by the divorce, and it is said that he battled depression and suicidal thoughts. Herjavec increased his charitable activities during this time and made large contributions to a Seattle homeless shelter.
Further, 2015 saw Robert Herjavec take part in Dancing with the Stars’ 20th season. He shared a partnership with Australian dancer Kym Johnson. Later, Kym would marry him. They welcomed twins into the world in 2017.
