Wilson was born to his parents as Russell Carrington Wilson on 29th November 1988, at Cincinnati, Ohio. He is 32 years old as of 2020. He is the son of Harrison Benjamin Wilson III, a lawyer, and Tammy Wilson, a legal nurse consultant.

Wilson has an elder brother, Harrison IV, and a younger sister, Anna. His two siblings are also into sports. His sister plays basketball for Stanford while his brother played college football and baseball at the University of Richmond.

Wilson began playing professional baseball after being drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the fourth round (140th pick overall) of the 2010 MLB draft on June 8, 2010. That summer Wilson played 32 games as a second baseman for the Tri-City Dust Devils, the Class A Short Season affiliate of the Rockies in the Northwest League. He finished the season with two home runs, 11 RBIs, and a .230 batting average.

Russell made an announcement that he was going to begin baseball training at the Colorado Rockies association. He later expressed a desire to be drafted into the NFL and his head coach Obrien and staff searched for scouts who will invite him into the 2011 scouting combine but to no avail.

Likewise, he was later released from a university scholarship having one year left, and was made a free agent. Russell later transferred to the Wisconsin Badgers, where he spent his 2011 and 2012 seasons. Moreover, he got selected by the Seattle Seahawks in the 75th overall pick of the NFL in the 6th round.
