Wilson was born to his parents as Russell Carrington Wilson on 29th November 1988, at Cincinnati, Ohio. He is 32 years old as of 2020. He is the son of Harrison Benjamin Wilson III, a lawyer, and Tammy Wilson, a legal nurse consultant.
Wilson has an elder brother, Harrison IV, and a younger sister, Anna. His two siblings are also into sports. His sister plays basketball for Stanford while his brother played college football and baseball at the University of Richmond.
Russell’s father was a sportsman who played baseball and football at Dartmouth but ended up practicing law. He died in 2010 after a long battle with diabetes.
Wilson attended The Collegiate School, a preparatory school in Richmond, Virginia. While there he served as class president and as a member of both the basketball and baseball teams. As a junior in 2005, Wilson threw for 3,287 yards and 40 touchdowns.
After high school graduation, he went on to North Carolina State University where he completed his baccalaureate in communications. Seemingly not satisfied with that, Wilson went on to earn his Masters in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Wilson began playing professional baseball after being drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the fourth round (140th pick overall) of the 2010 MLB draft on June 8, 2010. That summer Wilson played 32 games as a second baseman for the Tri-City Dust Devils, the Class A Short Season affiliate of the Rockies in the Northwest League. He finished the season with two home runs, 11 RBIs, and a .230 batting average.
