At the age of 11, Hauer received his first acting role as Eurysakes in the play Ajax. He began his career as a stage performer with the Toneelgroep Noorder Compagnie after graduating from the Academy for Theater and Dance. Hauer made his movie debut in 1969, when Paul Verhoeven placed him in the lead role of the Dutch medieval action drama Floris. In his own Germany, the role made him famous, and Hauer recreated it in the 1975 German version Floris von Rosemund.
He made his English-language debut in the British film The Wilby Conspiracy two years later (1975). The film, set in South Africa, was an action-drama about apartheid. However, his supporting part went unnoticed in Hollywood, and he returned to Dutch cinema for several years. During this time, he directed Katie Tippel (1975) and collaborated with Verhoeven on Soldier of Orange (1977) and Spetters (1979). (1980). Hauer appeared in these two films alongside fellow Dutch actor Jeroen Krabbé.
The night before filming, Hauer created portions of the speech himself, “cutting out swaths of the original screenplay before adding the speech’s heartbreaking last sentence.” He went on to portray the adventurer wooing Theresa Russell in Eureka (1983), the investigative reporter opposite John Hurt in The Osterman Weekend (1983), the tough Landsknecht mercenary Martin in Flesh & Blood (1985), and the knight opposite Michelle Pfeiffer in Ladyhawke (1985).
He played a mystery hitchhiker terrorizing a lone motorist and murdering everybody in his path in The Hitcher (1986). Hauer also appeared in Wanted: Dead or Alive in 1987 as Nick Randall, the descendent of the character played by Steve McQueen in the television series of the same name. In Ermanno Olmi’s The Legend of the Holy Drinker, he played a homeless guy in 1988.
In 1992, he played the primary antagonist vampire Lothos in the horror-comedy picture Buffy the Vampire Slayer. He was also in Kylie Minogue’s music video for “On a Night Like This”. Rutger portrayed an assassin in Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (2003), a malevolent cardinal with clout in Sin City (2005), and a scheming corporate executive at Wayne Enterprises in Batman Begins (2005). He also portrayed the titular character in Patrick Lussier’s 2005 film Dracula III: Legacy. Seven years later, in Dario Argento’s Dracula 3D, he played vampire hunter Abraham Van Helsing.
In 2005, Hauer presented the British reality television series Shock Treatment, and he played Real Madrid coach Rudi Van der Merwe in Goal II: Living the Dream (2007). He also provided voice-overs for the Danish butter company Lurpak’s British advertising campaign.
Hauer starred as Niall Brigant on HBO’s True Blood from 2013 to 2014. He played Ravn in The Last Kingdom and Kingsley in Galavant in 2015. In 2016, he served on the film jury at ShortCutz Amsterdam, an annual film festival in Amsterdam that promotes short films.
