Sinead Burke is an Irish woman who is short-statured. She is a writer and broadcaster. She came into prominence with her TED talk titled ‘Why Design should include everyone?’

Sinead Burke and her early life and childhood

Sinead Burke’s date of birth is not known. She is such an influencer that people look up at her for her talent and age becomes secondary. She was born in Ireland and worked as a primary school teacher there after her graduation from Marino Institute of Education. She topped in her class and won the coveted Vere Foster medal.

She later took up a Ph.D. study at the famous Trinity College, Dublin which she is currently pursuing. Her thesis topic is on human rights education with a particular stress on how schools allow children to have their voice.

There is no information known about her parents, siblings, or family. She suffers from achondroplasia, a genetic disorder due to which she is a dwarf with a height of 3 feet and 5 inches.

Sinead and her career

Sinead is an author, an academician, blogger, and broadcaster. She had worked as a school teacher before she started pursuing her Ph.D. At age of 16, she began to have a liking towards fashion and talks on it used to fascinate her. But she found that there was a limited amount of clothes and designs for people with some kind of disability, small or large.

She said:

“People didn’t take me seriously because of my physical aesthetic, so I started blogging… and calling out the [fashion] industry.”

She was concerned about the exclusive nature of the fashion industry.

Sinead started blogging and also founded the Inclusive Fashion and Design Collective or IFDC and with the US Disability advocate, Liz Jackson challenged the conventional thinking of the designers forcing them to think diversely. She began work with these fashion designers and found beautiful solutions to the problems of the people with disabilities.

Sinead values aesthetics and wanted designers to stop making ugly clothes for people with disabilities. She wanted them to think outside of the box and find good designs for them. She says:

“Design is an enormous privilege, but it is a bigger responsibility”

She was invited to White House and has been fighting for the disabled class in all walks of life. She attends fashion weeks and tries to make the designers aware of this aspect of inclusive clothing for all. She is the brand ambassador of the Irish Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Children and Irish Girl Guides.

The TED talk

In her TED talk, she said:

“I often forget that I am a small person. It is the physical environment around me that remind me. I want garments that reflect my personality. It is difficult to find those in the children’s wear department. And often women’s wear requires far too many alterations. I want shoes that affect my maturity, professionalism and sophistication. Instead I am offered sneakers with straps and light-up shoes,”

She is proud of her short stature. She has appeared on the covers of several magazines such as Business of Fashion. She was named as one of the 25 most influential women by Vogue.

Sinead and personal life

Sinead is unmarried and there have been no relationships discussed with her. She has no boyfriend or husband and children. She is probably single.

Sinead and  Ann O’Dea, have been awarded Honorary Fellow awards from the Institute of Art, Design, and Technology (IADT) in Dún Laoghaire.
