Stephen Smith grew up in Queens, but he was born on 14 October 1967 in the Bronx, NY. He grew up along with one younger brother and four sisters.

Smith’s parents came from the United States Virgin Islands where his dad was a baseball player and also basketball star in the 1950s, and later he managed to run a hardware store. Smith’s younger brother was very supportive of him, but in 1992, he died in a car accident. Smith does have his half-brother on his father’s side.
