Who is Mike Soroka? Childhood, Parents, Education, and Nationality

Michael John Graydon Soroka, better known by his stage as Mike Soroka, was raised and born in Calgary, Alberta. He is the son of Gary Soroka, the father, and Sally Soroka, the mother.

His father was an athlete just like him, playing hockey in his junior and university years. However, it is currently unknown where his mother is. There is nothing known about his siblings other than what is known about his parents.

However, Soroka initially followed his father’s example and played goaltender for youth hockey, continuing the road set by him.

Later, his attention shifted away from hockey and onto baseball only. Likewise, Mike Soroka holds Canadian nationality.

For the Brave’s opening day lineup, Mike Soroka will be the youngest starter.

Mike Soroka will start on opening day against the Mets on July 24 in a first-ever for the Atlantic Braves, the team announced on Tuesday. The 22-year-old Soroka will be the first player in Braves history.

Additionally, the game will take place at Citi Field, where he made his major league debut in 2018. The young athlete was notified Monday following his pitch by their manager, Brian Snitker.

The Mets’ ace and reigning two-time Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom will likely receive his first pitch, as well. Soroka, of course, praised the adversary. Jacob was even named by him baseball’s top pitcher.

How did Mike Soroka start his Professional Career?

Mike threw on the junior national team while being coached by Chris Reitsma after deciding against playing hockey. During his time at the University of Berkeley, he continued to play baseball.

Before becoming pro, Mike was placed 88th in Baseball America’s yearly prospect rankings. The Atlanta Braves then selected him with the 28th overall pick in the 2015 Major League Basketball draft.

Similarly, Soroka was signed by the Braves before reporting to the GCL Braves. He had a 1.80 ERA in ten innings before being sent to the Danville Braves. In the following years, Soroka played for the Mississippi Braves in 2017 and the Rome Braves in 2016.

Additionally, in July, Soroka took part in the All-Star Futures Games. Mike then started the 2018 campaign with the Gwinnett Stripers of the Class AAA International League after accruing innings.

Last but not least, Soroka debuted in the major leagues on May 1 with the Braves. In his debut game, Mike pitched six innings against the New York Mets, giving up one run while striking out five batters.

He was unfortunately placed on the injured list due to a shoulder injury. Having been placed on the 60-day disabled list on June 27, Soroka didn’t come back until August.

Even with the injury, Soroka was only able to make five starts, compiling a 2-1 record, 3.51 ERA, and 21 strikeouts. Soroka’s 2019 season unfortunately did not get off to a good start as he reported shoulder pain and missed January’s games.

Mike eventually made his season debut on April 18, 2019, against the Arizona Diamondbacks after all that. Without even mentioning it, he was also the National League’s youngest pitcher.

Being the youngest pitcher from the Atlanta Braves to be named an All-Star also set a record for Mike. He also finished second in the National League Rookie of the Year voting and sixth in the National League City Young Voting.
