Family and Education

Allen Ezail Iverson, better known as Allen Iverson, was born on June 7, 1975, in Hampton, Virginia. Ann Iverson, his mother, was 15 years old when he was born.

His father, Allen Broughton, left his mother before he was born. As a result, she gave Allen her maiden name. Ann then relocated with her young kid to the new apartment of her new lover, Michael Freeman.

Career

In 1994, the point guard enrolled at Georgetown University. He was named to the All-Rookie Tournament First Team and was named Big East Rookie of the Year in his rookie season.

Allen also won the Big East Championship with the Hoyas in his second season. When he finished his collegiate career, he was the all-time top-average scorer with 22.9 points per game.

Professional Career

Allen was the NBA draft’s shortest selection at the time. He made his debut against the Milwaukee Bucks, scoring 30 points and dishing out six assists. Then, against the Chicago Bulls, Allen outscored Michael Jordan by 37 points.

Allen averaged 28.5 points per game in 10 postseason games during the 1998-1999 season. The next season, he renewed his contract for six years with a net salary of $70 million. But also this season.

In addition, for the first time in his career, Iverson was named to the Eastern Conference All-Star team.

Iverson was the MVP of the 2001 NBA All-Star Game in the 2000-01 season. In addition, he was selected as the NBA’s Most Valuable Player for the season. Allen was the lowest and lightest player to ever win the MVP award.

In the first NBA Finals since 1983, the 76ers met the Los Angeles Lakers, who were led by Kobe Bryant. Iverson scored 48 points as the 76ers defeated the Lakers 107-101 to win the NBA title.

Playoff Disappointments

Allen’s 2001-02 season was hampered by injuries. Despite this, he averaged 31.4 points in 60 games. As a consequence, the 76ers were eliminated from the first round of the playoffs by the Boston Celtics.

The 76ers were eliminated in the second round of the playoffs the following season by the Detroit Pistons.

Allen was suspended and fined at the end of the 2003-04 season for skipping practice under a new coach. The 76ers were unable to make the playoffs this season.

In the 2006-07 season, the club had another dismal start, going 5-10 in 15 games. Later, Allen’s 10-year tenure with the Sixers came to an end after he reportedly requested to be dealt.

 National Career

Allen was a member of the USA World University Games Team in 1995, along with Tim Duncan and other future NBA players. The team won the gold medal with a 141-81 victory over the hosts, Japan.

Allen started eight games for Team USA in the FIBA Americas Olympic Qualifying Tournament in 2003. During the season, he ranked tenth in scoring, fourth in steals, and seventh in assists. With a sprained right thumb, he missed the USA’s final two matches.

Olympic Career

Iverson competed for the United States at the Summer Olympics in Athens in 2004. Furthermore, he was coached by great coach Larry Brown.

Allen, along with Tim Duncan, was the captain of the 2004 US men’s basketball team. It was the first Olympics since 1992 in which the United States did not win a gold medal.

It was also the team’s second Olympic bronze medal since 1988. Furthermore, it was the men’s basketball team’s poorest showing since NBA players were allowed to compete in Olympic sports.

The United States squad lost three games, including the first one against Puerto Rico, which they lost by 19 points. It marks the team’s greatest margin of defeat to date.

Iverson has not competed in an Olympic Games since then, and Tokyo 2020 is no exception. Furthermore, he is a retired athlete who will not be returning to the US men’s basketball team in Tokyo.

Rafer Alston played college basketball for three seasons: one each at Ventura College (1994–95), Fresno City College (1996–97), and Fresno State (1997–98). After that, he was red-shirted at Fresno City College for the 1995–96 season.

Professional Career

Alston started his professional career by entering the 1998 NBA Draft. He was selected by Milwaukee Bucks in the second round as the 39th pick overall.  After that, Alston was traded to the Toronto Raptors in 2003.

After the Raptors, Alston emerged as a starter for the Miami Heat in 2004. He scored averaging 12 points and 4 assists on a young Miami team, led by rookie guard Dwyane Wade.

He hit a game-winning shot in overtime with 0.5 seconds against the Dallas Mavericks.

Although, he signed a multi-year deal with the Toronto Raptors in the summer of 2004. Later on, Alston was traded to the Houston Rockets for guard Mike James on 4th October 2005.

Alston averaged 13.3 points, 3.4 rebounds, 5.4 assists, and 1.6 steals per game during the 2006–07 season.

Additionally, he finished the season ninth in steals among all NBA players, fourth in three-pointers made, and 23rd in assists.

Alston suspended for two games without pay for his role in a fight after a non-call foul with Matt Barnes and Steve Nash on 12th November 2008. 

Later on, Alston was traded to the Orlando Magic in a three-way deal on 19th February 2009. He helped the Orlando Magic defeat the Philadelphia 76ers 4–2 in the first round of the NBA Playoffs on 30th April 2009.

Likewise, Alston averaged 10.6 points, 3.0 assists, and 2.2 rebounds in the Finals. After that, Alston played for the New Jersey Nets in 2009.

Although, he was traded to the New Jersey Nets along with Tony Battie and Courtney Lee in exchange for Vince Carter and Ryan Anderson on 25th June 2009.
