Michael van Gerwen| Early Life and Family

On April 25, 1989, a darts genius named Michael was born in Boxtel, Netherlands. His father is Henri van Gerwen, and his mother is Wilma van Gerwen.

The three siblings of Michael are Samantha van Gerwen, Kevin van Gerwen, and Peggy van Gerwen.

Michael has cherished athletics ever since he was a young youngster. When he was 12 years old and playing football, he was a defender.

When he was 13 years old, he started to concentrate on darts. Then Michael started playing darts regularly. At the age of 14, Michael advanced to the Primus Masters Youth event final.

With a strong throw on nine darts in 2007, Gerwen defeated dart players like Raymond van Barneveld. That same year, he also had a clean sweep over Phil “The Power” Taylor.

Later, after making it to two PDC Youth World Championship finals, he improved and enjoyed himself, which led to a stunning career turnaround.

Additionally, as time went on, Michael won a number of titles and in 2011 was voted Young Player of the Year.

With his greatest efforts, Gerwen won seven Pro Tour and World Grand Prix championships. The Dutch player came within one dart of becoming the first to pull off the feat in back-to-back legs.

PDC career

Van Gerwen was placed at number 88 in the first PDC World Rankings. He was a BDO player who had already qualified for some BDO events in his home country before switching to the PDC. This includes the Open Holland in 2006, where he took first place.

He made his PDC debut on January 20 at the non-televised Stan James Players Championships in Gibraltar, defeating Andy Hamilton before losing to fellow countryman Roland Scholten in the round of 16.

He made his PDC televised debut at the 2007 UK Open, where he was defeated by Colin Osborne in the round of 32. Van was one leg from winning at 12-10 when Ronnie Baxter eliminated him in round two of the World Matchplay in Blackpool. His attempt to enter the 2007 Las Vegas Desert Classic was unsuccessful.

He faced Phil Taylor in the first round of the 2008 PDC World Championship; interestingly, he just needed one dart at double 12 to win the match and defeat the 13-time world champion. Taylor would not have made it to another PDC World Championship Final, breaking an extraordinary streak.

In the quarterfinals of that year, Wayne Mardle broke Taylor’s winning streak.

Van Gerwen dropped his throw in set 10’s opening throw, falling behind two legs to one. In the fifth leg of the set, which he would have been throwing for the entire match, he then missed six darts, which allowed Cross to enter the fray and tie the match at five sets apiece.

Controversies

The “Coughing” incident

In 2022, Luke Humpries attacked Michael for employing unethical methods. Michael is said to have started coughing while Luke was on the oche trying to win the match.

When Michael exited the match, Humpries was furious. However, Luke has refuted Michael’s claims that his coughing was a ploy.

The “Beer” incident

During the 2018 World Darts Championship, beer was thrown in the direction of Michael van Gerwen, the champion.

However, Barney’s debut was cut short as he was soundly trounced by Keith Sullivan. He also began to acquire prominence on the BDO circuit in the early 1990s.

Four World Titles

Barney defeated Richie Burnett to win his first global championship in 1998 after falling to him in the second round of the 1996 and 1997 World Championships.

The Dutch player successfully defended his championship the next year. The victory over Ronnie Baxter was also won by Barney by the same margin as the previous year.

Raymond experienced a similar fate, losing in the quarterfinals in 2001 and 2002 before reaching the championship game in 2003. The player won his third world title by downing Ritchie Davies of Wales 6-3.

A fourth title was also released in 2005. In the first three rounds, Raymond defeated Mike Veitch, Gary Anderson, and Vincent van der Voort without dropping a set.

Barney won his fourth title after defeating Darryl Fitton 5-3 in the semifinals and Englishman Martin Adams 6-2 in the championship match.

UK Open Title

Barney defeated Barrie Bates in the final of the UK Open in June. His first important PDC championship had just been achieved.

Barneveld defeated Phil Taylor in the Las Vegas Desert Classic 2006 semifinals two weeks later.

Grand Slam of Darts 2012

After defeating Kist 16-10 to avenge his quarterfinal loss, Barney defeated fellow Dutchman Wesley Harms 10-4 in the round of 16.

He also defeated Andy Hamilton 16-10 in the semifinal match, putting a Dutchman against a Dutchman final against Grand Prix winner Michael van Gerwen on the line.

Premier League

During the Premier League era, Barney fired some of his most reliable darts, staying unbeaten for 12 games and coming in second place.

For the first time in 21 tries, he defeated Phil Taylor in the event semifinals, coming back from a 4-1 deficit to win 8-5.

Since losing at this level the previous six years, the Dutch player has never advanced past the semifinals of the competition.

After winning four straight legs to tie the match at 5-5 in the final, Raymond also went on to defeat Michael van Gerwen to win the title 10-6.

Retirement and Comeback

Barney was knocked in the second round of the 2019 PDC Championship by Darius Labanauskas.

The Dutch player was also allowed to participate in the 2019 Premier League Darts but was eliminated after nine games after placing last in the standings.

Barneveld announced his immediate retirement on March 28 after being defeated, only to change his mind the next day.

After losing 3-1 to American Darin Young in the PDC Championship 2020 opening round—a result he claimed he could “never forgive” himself for—he made his retirement announcement.

On September 23, 2020, Raymond said that he was reconsidering his plan to retire and that he wanted to participate in the PDC Q-School for 2021.

After winning on points, the Dutch player proceeded to the second round of Q-school. On the final day, he earned his two-year tour card by finishing third on the Order of Merit.

At the Players Championship 3 in Bolton on February 27, Barneveld won his opening match for the third time in a row.
