He was officially placed on the injured reserve on 30th November 2009. He appeared in all sixteen games of the 2010 season before undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his left knee on 3rd January 2011.

Although, he did not participate in any preseason games because he was still recovering from arthroscopic surgery on his left knee.

He played only five games during the 2011 season. Meanwhile, he broke Jerry Smith’s Week 1 record of 421 receptions against the New York Giants and became the Washington Redskins’ all-time leader in tight end receptions with 422 catches.
