At the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York, Michael was tasked with televising the ice hockey match between the United States and the Soviet Union.

He was chosen for the game based on his prior performance at a similar game during the 1972 Winter Olympics.

The adage was relevant considering that a previously unknown group of college boys from the American team had to upset the Soviet team, who were the clear favorites, in order to win the gold medal.

Baseball Broadcasts

Michaels covered games in Major League Baseball in 1985. He presided over Game 5 of the American League Division Series between the Boston Red Sox and California Angels alongside Jim Palmer.

In 2003, he additionally made a one-time guest commentary appearance on Wednesday Night Baseball on ESPN.

During Game 7 of the 1989 World Series between the Giants and Oakland Athletics, there was an earthquake. Michaels and his coworker Palmer both received bruises while reporting.

His commitment led to his being nominated for an Emmy Award for news broadcasting.

Monday Night Football

Michaels has been the play-by-play announcer for ABC Sport’s Monday Night Football broadcast since 1986. He presided over the Super Bowl in 1988 and 1991.
