His father Loren Van Dyke (1900-1976) was of Dutch descent, while his mother Hazel Vorice (1896-1992) was an English and Scottish. She was a Mayflower descendant. He has an elder brother called Dick Van Dyke who is 6 years older to him and has a powerful personality. Jerry had stayed most of the time in Dick’s shadow.

Career and Professional life
Jerry had a likable factor in him. He used to jest around a lot and was considered a clown at school. He started to work as a stand-up comedian in local strip clubs and nightclubs.
Similarly, his banjo-playing was also an intricate part of the routine programs and shows. He was a regular performer in the Playboy club circuit. Jerry later moved on to the larger showrooms in Las Vegas, Lake Tahoe, and Atlantic City and his acts gained a lot of fan base and support.
Likewise, his career was interrupted when Jerry joined the US Air Force in 1952. He took to doing some special shows and would entertain the troops. He won the military talent shows two times. He was far too good in his comic work. Due to these wins, Jerry got a chance to appear on ‘The Ed Sullivan Show’.
He gained some TV exposure and he became a regular to feature on ‘The Judy Garland Show’. He also bagged some comic acting roles which he successfully performed. He also hosted a game show.

He got some lovely roles to play which later would have become memorable and given him much more fame. But he, unfortunately, turned them down; a decision which he regretted later in his life. He had been offered a good role in ‘Gilligan’s Island (1964) and on ‘The Andy Griffith Show’ (1965) but he declined both. It was sheer cruel luck that he took up those shows and roles which did not fetch him much fame at that time.
He also would appear on his brother’s show called as ‘The Dick Van Dyke Show’. He finally landed the role of his life; namely that of the hapless Luther van Dam’ in Coach (1989). It was this role which he could do for a longer time and also fetched him fame and money. He had continuity of money and also four consecutive Emmy Award nominations for this role.
