Tina Turner’s life story is one of bravery and of a woman who never gave up. She lived a dramatic life and is considered a legend. Tina Turner growing and pre-fame years
Tina was born Anna Mae Bullock on 26 November 1939. She was raised in a small town called Nutbush, Tennessee. Her father used to manage a farm there. Life was not easy but her family had adequate food to eat and a house to stay.
Little Anna was fascinated by the films, songs, and city life which she came to know from the magazines which reached her little town. She wanted to live that life and had her dreams. At the same time, there was unhappiness at home. Her parents had frequent fights and these escalated to the extent that her mother Zelma left for St. Louis never to return. She was 10 at that time and the time was terrible for her and her 13-year-old sister Alline.
Her father soon remarried and left for Detroit. A cousin sheltered them and later Alline moved in with her mother and Anna followed suit. After her high school graduation, Anna started visiting Club Manhattan with her elder sister. It was here that she was introduced to Ike Turner who was the leader of the group Kings of Rhythm.

The initial singing
Anna requested a chance to sing with the group. She got the chance and started singing. Ike had heard her sing for the first time. He liked it so much that he jumped off the stage, ran across the room, and picked Anna up. She soon joined the group and was bestowed with gifts from Ike.
Anna had not talked about her new job at the Club with Zelma. Zelma soon came to know about it accidentally from another singer. She refused to allow Anna to work at the club. Ike convinced her on it and Anna took the stage name of Tina Turner. This was in 1958.

Tina continued to work as a nurse in the day and sing at the club at night. Tina got into a relationship with a band member and delivered a son, Craig.

Ike and Tina continued to make music that hit the music charts. The band was renamed The Ike and Tina Turner Revue. Tina’s happiness knew no bounds. She was doing what she liked the most-making soulful music.
The happiness was not to last
Soon things changed. Ike started controlling the band. Tina had another son with Ike. Ike started controlling her. Tina had also started taking care of Ike’s two sons from the first marriage. The band’s popularity rose and so did Tina’s work and difficulties. In 1962, Ike proposed to her and the two soon after married. The band’s music gained huge success and tours and TV shows came their way.
Drifting from Ike
She met a fortune-teller who said:
“You will be among the biggest of stars, and the person with you will fall away like a leaf from a tree.”
Music was coming but with it were also hardships for Tina and domestic violence from Ike. She had endured it for 14 years but now she decided to break free.
She also got offers to act which she accepted. She also released her first solo album in 1974. Tina’s fame soared and Ike was angry. In 1976, she hit back at Ike and walked out of his life with just 36 cents in her pocket and a Mobil gas card.
The divorce and solo fruitful career
A nasty public fight ensued but Tina managed to break free and start her solo life and career. She took 8 years to reestablish herself and proved to be more successful than Ike. With Roger Davies’ help, she soon sprung back and released albums and songs. She had a new German boyfriend Erwin Bach. She toured internationally and received several awards.
