Matthew Gray Gubler was born on 9 March 1980 in Las Vegas, Nevada, to Marilyn (née Kelch) who worked as a rancher and political consultant, and John Gubler who is an attorney.
Matthew wanted to learn filmmaking but the institute did not offer it to him and hence he majored in acting from the Las Vegas Academy of International Studies, Visual and Performing Arts. Later Matthew joined NY University’s Tisch School of the Arts and majored in film direction from here.

Matthew Gray Gubler started getting offers for modeling while he was still undergoing training at the NYU Film School. After being discovered by a model scout, he first worked as a model for DNA Model Management and served as a model for Tommy Hilfiger, Marc Jacobs, and American Eagle.
He then started work with Wes Anderson who encouraged him to give auditions for acting roles. He landed the role of intern no. 1 in the film The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.
