Kurtwood Smith’s birth, childhood, and education
Kurtwood Smith was born on 3 July 1943 in New Lisbon, Wisconsin, the USA. His parents were Mabel Annette Lund and George Smith. Kurtwood’s name was given to him by his mother who was a great fan of a country singer called Kurt or Curt. This singer was famous in the 1940s. Mabel thought that Kurt Smith as a name would be too short and hence she made it as Kurtwood Smith and that is how Kurtwood derived his name. Sounds rather interesting!
Kurtwood was raised in San Fernando Valley and attended the Canoga Park High School of Canoga Park, California. He completed it in 1961. He was good in his studies and was the class President in his senior year. He then enrolled in San Jose State University and obtained his BA in 1965. Kurtwood started working in films and TV in 1980. His first movie was ‘Roadie’ in which he portrayed a security guard. He was also seen in the same year on TV in one episode of ‘Soap’ where he did the role of a Man in a laundromat. He did Zoot Suit, Staying Alive, Going Berserk, Blue Thunder, and Flashpoint before he landed the role of Clarence Boddicker in the 1987’s RoboCop. This gained him popularity and fame.
He was simultaneously doing TV roles and was seen in Me and Maxx, Lou Grant, Renegades, the A-team, Stir Crazy, The Midnight Hour, The Best Times, The Paper Chase, It’s a Living, Deadly Messages, Stingray, North and South, Newhart, and The Terrible Thunderlizards. He also voiced a character in 500 Nations. In 1996, he portrayed the role of Agent Bill Patterson in ‘The X Files’.
He also did the role of Thrax in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. In 1997, he also appeared in Star Trek: Voyager. His next breakthrough role was that of Red Forman in ‘That ‘70s Show’. He played varied characters in other TV series right up to the present time when he is seen in Pig Goat Banana Cricket as the voice of angry old raisin. He played Senator Blaine Mayer in the seventh season of the action thriller called ‘24’.

Kurtwood has been married twice. He first tied the knot with Cecilia Souza in 1964 after dating her for less than 6 months. However, differences between them rose within a decade of their marriage and they divorced and legally split in 1974. They have one daughter called Laurel Garner.
Kurtwood Smith then went on to date and married American actress Joan Pirkle. The marriage was solemnized in 1988. They have a son called Shannon Smith. They have been married for nearly three decades now. The family resides in Glendale, California and all are leading a happy family life.
