Minor League Career
His professional career started as a pitcher on December 26, 2011, when he signed with the New York Yankees as an international free agent for a contract of $225,000 signing bonus.
He then made his professional debut in the Dominican Summer League the same year with a 1.68 earned run average (ERA) and 45 strikeouts in 64 1⁄3 innings in 14 games. He had a record of throwing his fastball at 91 miles per hour.
In 2013, he was able to start with the DSL Yankees 1. His promotion later was to the Charleston RiverDogs of the Class A South Atlantic League. His fastball record improved to 97 miles per hour at Charleston.

Baseball America ranked him as the Yankees ninth-best prospect before the 2014 season. He was also able to appear in the 2014 All-Star Futures Game in July. He was ranked the best prospect in the Yankees farm system and the 23rd best out of all minor league players by MLB Pipeline and also 35th rank by Baseball America before the 2015 season.
Major League Career
In the same year, Michael Pineda was injured and the Yankees not acquiring a starting pitcher before the trade deadline, Severino got his opportunity and made his major league debut at Yankee stadium. His stats on his rookie season was having started 11 games, pitching 62 1⁄3 innings with a 5–3 record, 2.89 ERA and 56 strikeouts. He finished his 2016 season with a 3-8 record and an ERA of 5.83.
On July 2nd, 2017, he was again able to appear to the American League All-Star Team. He ended the 2017 season with a career-high 193 1⁄3 innings in 31 starts, a 14–6 record, 2.98 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, .208 opponent batting average, 5.3 bWAR, 5.7 fWAR, and 230 strikeouts, tied with CC Sabathia for the third-most single-season strikeouts in Yankees history, and the most strikeouts in a single season by a right-handed pitcher in Yankees history in the Modern Era.
On March 17, 2018, he was able to appear at the Yankees Opening Day starter. In the game, he struck out seven and allowed one hit in 5 2⁄3 innings against the Toronto Blue Jays. He ended the season with a record of 19-8 and a 3.39 ERA.

Severino signed a contract extension of $40 million on February 15, 2019. However, on March 15, it was revealed that Severino was diagnosed with rotator cuff inflammation on his right shoulder and he was off for all of April. Unfortunately, on February 25, 2020, it was announced that he would undergo surgery to repair a partially torn UCL in his right elbow. He had to be off for the whole 2020 season.
