BeBe Winans was born Benjamin Winans on September 17, 1962, in Detroit, Michigan. He was born to David Winans Sr. (father) and Delores Winans (mother). He, along with his nine siblings(Marvin, Carvins, Ronald, Daniel, Michael, David Winans Jr., Cece, Angelique, and Debra), started singing in the choir at Mount Zion Church of God and Christ in Detroit. All of the Winans brothers and sisters were talented singers and contributed greatly to the church choir, in which both Winans’s parents also performed. BeBe holds American citizenship but his ethnicity is unknown.

Winans began his career as a background singer for his famous brothers, The Winans. He and his sister, CeCe, joined the television show Praise the Lord as the “PTL Singers” in 1982 and released their first record, “Lord Lift Us Up”, in 1984. BeBe and CeCe Winans eventually recorded five albums together including the self-titled BeBe & CeCe Winans (1987), Heaven (1988), Different Lifestyles (1991), First Christmas (1993), and Relationships (1994).

Solo albums

BeBe recorded numerous solo albums including BeBe Winans (1997), Love & Freedom (2000), Live and Up Close (2002), My Christmas Prayer (2004), and Dream (2006). The song uses samples from the historic speech by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at the 1963 March on Washington along with Winans’ singing of some of its passages. Winans has also recorded songs with such entertainers as Stevie Wonder, Brian McKnight, Whitney Houston.


In 2004, Winans made his film debut with a role in the remake of The Manchurian Candidate, featuring actors Denzel Washington and Meryl Streep. He also starred in the off-Broadway touring musical production of King Solomon Lives, A Nubian Love Story. Winans previously starred on Broadway in the shows Civil War and Don’t Get God Started and the national tour of What’s On the Hearts of Men.

In 2007, Winans began hosting his own nationally syndicated radio program, The BeBe Winans Radio Show.


He revealed that he was infected when he went to Detroit for a funeral ceremony of his friend. After his return, he started experiencing the symptoms of the coronavirus. As of now, he has been recovered from the virus.

In addition, his brother and mother are showing the symptoms of the virus. His brother, Marvin has been hospitalized for 4 to 5 days as he started having seizures and pneumonia. His mother is also facing the same symptoms.

He married Debra Denise Winans in 1997. They welcomed a son named Benjamin Winans Jr. and daughter, Miya Destiny Winans. However, their relationship did not work well and got divorced in 2003. In 2009, Debra filed a domestic violence case against him. Despite their difference, they are still putting their effort to be good parents. They were seen together in the graduation ceremony of their son, Benjamin.

Legal Controversies:

He was involved in a legal battle with his former business manager, Eric Peterson in November 2007. He filed with a lawsuit accusing his manager that he has a breach of managerial contract and fraud him. In addition, he mentioned that his manager has taken advantage of him on many occasions that include pursing him to give power of attorney.

Apart from that, BeBe was arrested on March 11, 2009, in charge of domestic violence. His ex-wife claimed that he pushed her to the ground in front of their children. He was released from the charges on December 4, 2009.
