Jack Welch was born John Francis Welch Jr. on 19 November 1935 in Massachusetts. He was born to John Francis Welch Sr, who was a railroad conductor, and Grace Andrews, who was a homemaker. Both were of Irish descent. He did different kinds of menial jobs as a high school student to help in supporting his parents, who were menial income earners on the home front. He was the only child of his parents.
Jack worked as a business acumen from a young age and worked during the summers as a newspaper boy, shoe salesman, and golf caddy while he was still a school student.
For education, he enrolled and completed his high school education at Salem high school. While there, he participated in sports like football, baseball. Later, he was accepted to study chemical engineering at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, where he graduated from in 1957.
After that, he joined the University of Illinois and received his Master’s and Ph.D. in chemical engineering. Then he began working in General Electric in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, as a junior chemical engineer with a salary of $10,500.

Jack died in his New York home on March 1, 2020, amidst his wife, children, and his lovely dogs. He died at the age of 84.
The reason behind the death was reported to be renal (kidney) failure by his wife a day after he was confirmed dead in his New York home. The US president, Donald Trump, consoled the family while naming Jack Welch’s death as the exit of ‘neutron’ jack.

In 1960, he joined General Electric in 1960 and began working as a junior chemical engineer in the plastics division. Unfortunately, he got a raise of less than what he had expected, he was disappointed and planned to quit.
However, he was persuaded to stay by an executive, Reuben Gutoff, and he reluctantly agreed. In 1963, there was an explosion at a factory building under his management and he was almost fired for this.
He finally became the vice president and head of GE’s entire plastics division in 1968and the division grew rapidly under his management.
From 1981, he served as the CEO and chairman of the company for 20 years till his retirement in 2001. The company’s value rose 4000% during his working period. Also, he became one of the greatest ever business leaders in the US.
Welch is also an author of the 2005 bestseller, ‘Winning’ which he co-wrote with his third wife, Suzy.

After that, he married former mergers and acquisition lawyer Jane Beasley in April 1989. Jane found that he was texting and sharing intimate messages with Suzy Wettlaufer. Suzy is the co-author of his book in 2005. In the end, he drafted a prenuptial agreement which meant she left the marriage with a mouth-watering $180 million.
Eventually, on April 24, 2004, he married Suzy Wettlaufer. But then, they had to leave on the 9th of October, 2012, after Fortune magazine released an article of Welch and his critical GE career.
Katherine Welch, one of his children, ran for Senate in East Bay California as a Democrat, but she lost. His other children are John Welch III, Mark Welch, Anne Welch.
