Marvin Winans was born Marvin Lawrence Winans on March 5, 1958, in Detroit, Michigan. He was born to David “Pop” Winans, Sr. and Delores “Mom” Winans. His siblings Daniel, Michael, Ronald, Priscilla (CeCe), David II, Carvin (his fraternal twin), Benjamin (BeBe), Deborah (Debbie), Angelique (Angie) are also musically gifted and have careers in the music industry singing, writing and producing.

Marvin started singing at the age of 4 and as he got older, he sang with siblings Ronald, Carvin, and Michael in the early 1970s as The Testimonial Singers. In 1975, the brother changed their name to The Winans. He was discovered by Andrae Crouch, The Winans and he was signed to Light Records and they released their first album in 1981.
When Marvin was 12 years old, he came to know Christ during a 150-day revival conducted by Mother Estella Boyd. After six years later, on December 18, 1976, he answered the call to ministry and preached his first sermon at Shalom Temple.
In addition, he wrote and produced songs for The Winans records, for solo projects from family members, He along with his family members sang The Winans hit Tomorrow at Whitney Houston’s funeral.
Because of his dedication towards music, for years he would preach in the hotel rooms that he and his brothers were staying in as they traveled for concerts. Eventually, in the basement of his home, he started a church with seven people who committed themselves to follow him as he followed Jesus. On May 27, 1989, Michigan held its first official service, Perfecting Church in Detroit.
In 2007, Winans decided to go solo by releasing his first solo recording, titled Alone, But Not Alone. 5 Years later, Winans released “Marvin L Winans Presents The Praise and Worship Experience” on his own label, MLW Productions Inc.
